The Kick Jett’s Scuzz-Rock stylings are driven by a Punk attitude and ‘Kick Ass’ agenda. In getting the band together Amy, Sophie, Louise and Cherie planned not only to rock out but also take to task a patriarchal industry and arena of music which, despite decades of evolution, still finds women underrepresented and absent from the party, particularly at a grassroots level. It was the bands individual personal experiences within the South Wales music scene, becoming fed up of being side-lined and underestimated as members of bands which were mostly guys, that united them to form the group, while at the same time also hoping to inspire other women to want to pick up instruments and form bands themselves.
The Kick Jetts share an affinity in both sound and politics with the 90’s Riot Grrrl movement and consider many of the bands to emerge from the scene as their influeces. The genesis of the The Kick Jetts occurred early 2019 when having each recently departed from long time bands, Amy Purdy and Sophie Leyman got together to try out a new musical direction. The pair were already friendly as they had been at the same school where they had shared a music teacher and mutual hero in the form of eighties icon Joan Jett. It was after a rewatch of ‘The Runaways’ film about Joan’s first group which inspired them to put out an advert to form an all female band, the pair looking to the ‘The Blackhearts’ front-woman as a forbearer in the voice for female led, heavier, louder, Rock music with un-compromising attitude. It was these common values that led them to chose their band name as homage to their hero, but also as a statement of their intent, to make some noise and not let bias stand in their way. After a brief search asking around the local scene for like minded musicians, it was not long before Drummer Cherie Rowe and Singer Louise Webber answered the call, both enthusiastic to be completing the line up for a shared ideology.
In the short time they have been together as a band The Kick Jett’s have gained increasing traction and recognition through a steady stream of shows in venues across their home town of Swansea and are due to head into the studio imminently to make their debut recordings with DMR to be released before the end of 2020, with UK wide shows in the pipeline.
